Trimix Diver Course
![]()
Past depths approaching 150 feet or more, nitrogen narcosis can have a significantly detrimental effect on both safety and enjoyment. The only way to mitigate these effects is to dilute the potentially narcotic gasses in the breathing mixture with the non-narcotic gas helium. The resulting mix of nitrogen, oxygen and helium is known as Trimix.
Trimix becomes essential as one approaches depths of 200 feet or more, due to the potentially toxic effects of breathing the high partial pressures of oxygen associated with deep air diving. Diving Trimix, however, has its own risks and hazards, including:
- Although helium offgasses faster than nitrogen, it also ingasses faster, mean that you may require longer deco stops than would be necessary on air or Nitrox.
- Some Trimix mixtures are hypoxic at shallow depths. This is a fancy way of saying “insufficient oxygen to support life.”
These reasons, among others, are why formal Trimix Diver training is essential — and why we offer this program to qualified divers.
