Whitefish

Map

July 10-11, 2010: Wreck we often dive on this trip include;

  • Miztec - Depth 45-50 ft: A schooner-barge built in Marine City, Mi in 1890. Lost the entire crew. The wreck is broken up, but you can still see the hardware and lots of tools.
  • Myron - Depth 42-50 ft: Wood steamer built in 1888 in Grand Haven, MI. The wreck lies broken in two sections. The bow with the anchor chain tapestry, and the stern with the propeller and engine.
  • Samuel Mather - Depth 150-180 ft: This wooden steamer sank in a collision with a steel steamer in November of 1891. One of the best preserved and most intact wreck off Whitefish Point. Sits upright and two masts are still standing.
  • Vienna - Depth 118-148 ft: A wooden steamer carrying iron ore collided with another steamer in 1892. No lives were lost. This is a great wreck with a lot to see. A lifeboat near midship, rudder, deck tools, winch, and much more.

Whitefish Point reaches into Lake Superior at the Southeast end of the lake. This provides a separation between Whitefish Bay and the Soo Locks. All the boats must pass through the bay and around Whitefish Point before entering or leaving Lake Superior.
